Fisheries are central to food security, livelihoods, and cultural identity for millions of people in Tanzania, particularly in communities around Lake Victoria and other freshwater systems. However, overfishing, habitat degradation, pollution, and climate change are placing increasing pressure on fish populations and the ecosystems that sustain them. Addressing these challenges requires approaches that protect aquatic biodiversity while supporting the well-being of fishing-dependent communities.
Through our Sustainable Fisheries & Livelihoods programme, Sustainable Futures Tanzania (SFT) promotes responsible and inclusive fisheries practices that balance ecological sustainability with social and economic needs. We work with local communities, fishers, women’s and youth groups, and other stakeholders to strengthen sustainable resource use, enhance value chains, and support diversified and resilient livelihoods linked to healthy aquatic ecosystems.
Our approach integrates scientific knowledge, local experience, and community participation. By linking fisheries management, habitat protection, and livelihood development, we aim to ensure that fisheries continue to provide nutrition, income, and resilience for present and future generations
